1862 January 10

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts Infantry]

We sailed on last night till nearly
three o'clock when the fog was so
thick. We stopped and anchored. I went to
my room early and so secured it last
night. I have been a little sea-sick today
and have felt blue as I do not know what
to do. the Col. of the 10th Conn. advises me to
rejoin my own regiment, but I was placed
here by Capt Goodrich and told to await
further orders so I think I shall do so. I lay
round most of the time to day. Wrote a letter
home this evening. The fort is quite a sight
even on the outside at a distance we reach-
ed here about ten I think. We are anchored
a short distance from the fort right beyond the Rif-rafs
is Sewalls Point, where the Rebels have batteries.

The Rif-Rafs were a mass of rocks outside Fortress Monroe
