1861 Dec[ember] 10 Ungers Store

My Darling Wife!
I made application yes-
terday for a leave of absence, but
was informed that I could not get
it until Col Echols returned who
has a leave for twenty five days
and starts home this morning. It
is to me a sad disappointment but
I must bear it cheerfully as I can
You must do the same. You must
make up your mind too Love to stay
at home. In the present state of our
finances we must save all we
can and this I feel sure will be
best done by your staying on the
farm. I think too you will be as
happy there as you could be
elsewhere.

I have received your letter of 2d inst
and for the happiness afforded me
by its perusal I am very grateful
You will need a boy at some $40
or 45 so hire to drive the rockaway
go to mill &c & you had better hire
one – I will write again Sunday

Goodbye & kiss the baby for me
Ever Yours
E.F. Paxton

[Paxton’s first mention of the new baby, Frank.]

[The above letter does not appear in Civil War Letters of General Frank “Bull” Paxton.]
