[from the diary of Francis G. Hale, Co. F, 34th Ohio Zouaves]

I am a gain on picket to
day on in the place where
one of our boys shot at
a fellow this morning but
did not hit him he run
like every thing he was
not farther than forty
yards he was just get ing
over the fence when he
shot at him he did not
get he not they did
not see any more of
him our company
went out on a
scout this evening
I do not know
when they will return
it is raining a little
this even ing and looks
like we will have a bad night.
