1861 November 6

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

I stood picket last night
till 12 o clock I had a revolver
and my gun & layed in
a fence corner all the
time but I did not see
any body if I had I
would undoubtedly shot
at him it commenced
to rain and thunder &
light ning as I came
of picket I went to bed
for we had a place to
sleepe there was six of
us to gether three on at
a time toward morning
they saw a man and
one fellow fired at him
but did not hit him
he run to I did not wake
up at all and diden see him
there was a lot of Co F
and Co I went out on a scir
mishing the brought in som
Cattle Horses & sheepe & a good
many prisners they was
a bout ten miles out
from camp they went
to one old secesh
and was treated very well
they slept in the beds
they sayed it was a
good treat to get in
a feather bed once more
they got their super
and break fast they
sayed they was not treated
any better at a neighbors
at home than they
was at home they shot
one fellow whilst out
