1861 November 2 Richmond

Confederate States of America
DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Montgomery Richmond

Miss Hetty Carey

I received
your letter and regret very much
that there should be no such employ
=ment in the State Department as
you desire. It is possible that some
of the other cabinet officers may
have places of that sort at their
disposal. Should I find such to
be the case I will on my best
efforts to obtain the employment for
you. I regret very much the
hard necessity of the times which
separates you from you home and
family and if I can aid you
during your exile I shall be
gratified to do so.

With great respect
your obdt servt
R. M. T. Hunter

Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter, 1809-1887, was an early graduate of University of Virginia. He served as both U.S. Representative and Senator from Virginia and was defeated by Stephen A. Douglas for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1860. He served as Confederate Secretary of State and as a member of the Confederate Senate. Early in 1865 he was a member of the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. Imprisoned briefly after the war, he afterwards returned to Virginia and helped organize a conservative party in opposition to the radical Republicans and served as State Treasurer.
