1862 January 15

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]

This morning came up into
the inlet. It was still cloudy
and dull, I found that one of our boats
was lost yesterday, in getting rid of the
barge. It is a desolate looking place here
a sort of sandy beach, flat and the
water is very shallow. I went over to the
New York to see the boys, and the Col. told
me I had better stay on this boat till
further orders. We have laid here all day
and it seems as if we never should get
off, but I know that we are int he Lords
hands and that He orders all things right
but my faith sometimes falters, as I see
and hear of circumstances, but then some
new mercy of the Lord is bestowed upon
me, and His spirit seems to be shed down
upon me for my comfort and gently
reproves my unbelief.
