[from the diary of Joseph A. Waddell, civilian clerk in the Quartermaster Dept., Staunton, Va.]
Tuesday night, Jan. 28, 1862.
Poor little Mary very ill. She breathes with
great difficulty, and I [ ‘should’ lined out] shall not be sur-
prised to hear of her death during the night. Va
is there again, although sitting up at night effects
her eyes very severely. No war news to-day.
